Watercolors from the series Drawings on the

When the artist was studying art in her hometown of Kerch, her teacher, trained in the doctrine of ‘Socialist Realism’, prohibited students from using watercolors. However, after moving to Kyiv and later to Stockholm to pursue her master’s degree, watercolor became a tool of self-reflection and therapy for Kulikovska.Facing the exhausting procedures of legalizing her stay in the EU and experiencing discrimination due to the unrecognized status of Crimea after the occupation, Kulikovska realized that the notion of home was deeply problematic in her situation.

Kulikovska no longer knew where home was or whether she would ever have one. In response to the pressure to fit her identity into a formal box, the artist began painting watercolors on blank forms from migration services, responding with them to the requests from these institutions.

The series The Saga about Me and My Pregnant Husband was created in 2021 during a very difficult pregnancy—one that was shared by two people, Kulikovska and Oleh Vinnichenko. The only difference was that Vinnichenko could not physically carry their child.

The watercolors from these series are in the collections of the Phoenix Museum (Rotterdam, the Netherlands), Francisco Carolinum Museum (Linz, Austria), Catinca Tabacaru Gallery, (Bucharest, Romania).

The series of watercolor artworks on the medical reports and ultrasound pictures issued on Maria Kulikovska’s pregnancy.
Selected watercolors are from the Museum for Media Art Francisco Carolinum’s collection (Linz Austria).
